CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Cook County Jail is going green.

County officials announced a $34 million program Monday to upgrade the jail's heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems and to install energy efficient lighting throughout the jail campus.

County Board President Toni Preckwinkle says the project includes 17 energy saving measures and it will pay for itself over the next 20 years.

She says the jail project will create 350 new construction jobs.
