Secular group opposes school trip to 'Charlie Brown' play

Posted: Updated:

An atheist group is accusing a public school of crossing the line between church and state by taking kids to a performance of "Merry Christmas Charlie Brown."

In this case, students from Terry Elementary School were invited to see the performance at a local church, but they were not required to attend.

A letter was sent home allowing parents who took exception to have their children remain at school.

The play is an adaptation of "A Charlie Brown Christmas," which contains a speech from Linus about the meaning of Christmas, which is adapted from Luke's gospel.

FOX News Radio reports that a parent objected to the students' trip to see the play and contacted the Arkansas Society of Freethinkers, a secular group.

The letter sent to parents said, "The district does not promote or encourage students to support any religious affiliation."
