CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
An off-duty university police officer shot a 15-year-old boy who tried to rob him under the guise of meeting to sell an iPhone on Monday in the South Side Calumet Heights neighborhood.
The 36-year-old Chicago State University officer was off-duty when he and a 16-year-old boy met the suspects to buy an iPhone advertised through social media at 4:55 p.m. in the 2200 block of East 87th Street, according to police.
The off-duty officer and teen were sitting in a vehicle when two boys, ages 15 and 17, displayed a handgun, announced a robbery and took a cell phone and cash, police said. The officer announced his office and fired one shot at the boy. Both boys fled on foot and the victims called police.
Officers found Kurtis Flowers, 17, attempting to hide in a front porch in the 8700 block of South Crandon Avenue, police said. The 15-year-old was taken into custody after he walked into Advocate Trinity Hospital, where he was treated and released.
The proceeds for the robbery were recovered, police said.
Kurtis Flowers, 17, of the 8900 block of South Essex Avenue, and the 15-year-old boy were charged with felony armed robbery with a firearm, police said.
Flowers is expected in bond court Tuesday. The boy was referred to juvenile court.
