Two officers were injured Tuesday morning in a crash in Palmetto that was the result of a pursuit with a suspect.
The incident started at the United Community Bank on Shannon Parkway just after 10 a.m. FOX 5's Chris Shaw reports police were called to the bank because the suspect, Rakim Jackson, had allegedly tried to use someone else's credit card. Jackson fled on foot to a nearby Walgreens, where he allegedly carjacked a white minivan.
Police chased Jackson into Palmetto, where a Palmetto police officer and a Union City police officer were involved in a crash. Georgia State Patrol says Palmetto Police Cpl. Michael Upshur was attempting to block the minivan with his cruiser. As Upshur made a u-turn on Roosevelt Highway near Phipps Road, Union City Master Patrol Officer Kevin Gilham crashed his cruiser into the Palmetto vehicle.
The suspect's vehicle was not involved in the accident, according to Palmetto police.
Both officers were transported to Atlanta Medical Center to be treated. Upshur, an 8-year veteran of the Palmetto Police Department, was listed in stable condition in the intensive care unit as of Tuesday afternoon.
Gilham is expected to be OK, officials said.
Jackson, 26, was taken into custody a short time after the crash. Union City police said they were interviewing him late Tuesday afternoon.
