CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about the controversy over what Bob Costas did last night.
During halftime of NBC's Sunday night football game, Costas referenced the weekend's murder-suicide involving Kansas City Chiefs Linebacker Jovan Belcher. He then did a commentary advocating stricter gun control. Here's some of what he said:
"You want some actual perspective on this? Well, a bit of it comes from the Kansas City-based writer Jason Whitlock with whom I do not always agree, but who today, said it so well that we may as well just quote or paraphrase from the end of his article. 'Our current gun culture,' Whitlock wrote, 'ensures that more and more domestic disputes will end in the ultimate tragedy and that more convenience store confrontations over loud music coming from a car will leave more teenage boys bloody and dead. Handguns do not enhance our safety. They exacerbate our flaws, tempt us to escalate arguments, and bait us into embrace confrontation rather than avoiding it.'"
Costas took a lot of flack today from people who don't think he should have expressed his views during a football broadcast. Some say he should be fired. That's ridiculous.
Whether you think he's right or wrong it was certainly not out of place to for him to talk about the tragedy involving an NFL star that was a major weekend news story. And whether it's his headline-making interview with Jerry Sandusky or criticizing the Olympics for not holding a moment of silence to mark the 40th anniversary of the Israeli athletes killed in Munich, Costas has always been a smart, serious journalist while covering sports. His opinions are always worth considering.
