Girls rescued from construction site

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A wall of mud caves in on two girls. One was completely buried in a deep pit -- the other barely able to keep her head above the dirt.

The accident was witnessed by other children who raced for help.

The neighborhood children were warned not to play in a foundation hole that was just dug up on Saturday.

Then, two sets of parents got the call Sunday afternoon...your daughters are trapped.

"Utter shock and disbelief..to think of your child being buried alive in mud it's just scary," Robert Salwierak said.

Eleven-year-old Nicole Salwierak and her friend were trapped in the mud in the 18300 block of White Oak Court in Tinley Park.

"The wall collapsed on top of them, so they were buried in mud, my daughter was on top of her friend. It was in more of a t-formation and that air pocket was able to allow her friend to be able to breath until they were both rescued," Salwierak added.

It took fire crews about a half hour to dig the girls out, both taken to an area hospital with minor injuries.

"She's got a bruised lung, her whole body is bruised, she can't move at all from being bruised, but she's alive and going to be ok," Salwierak said.

The families were grateful for Nicole's little sister for running to tell her mom to call for help.

"If she wasn't there who knows what would've happened," the father added.

Tinley Park firefighters agreed.

"All our guys did a fine job, got them out safely...the important thing is we've got two that are alive and that's what counts," the assistant fire chief said.

"When she gets passed the traumatic effect of this, yeah she's probably going to worry if she's going to be punished or not. But, I'll definitely take it easy on her, I'm just glad she's alive," Salwierak said.
