Illinois House approves pay freeze for unions

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Illinois House has overwhelmingly approved a bill that will mean no pay raises for 40,000 unionized state workers.

The House passed the bill on a vote of 84 to 29 and it now goes to the Senate where it is also expected to pass.

Supporters of the bill say the pay freeze is needed because the state simply doesn't have the money.

Union leaders say the vote violates the terms of their contract.

They claim any pay cut or freeze needs to be negotiated.
