STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. (WJBK) -- An 18-year-old girl could be charged with animal cruelty.  Sterling Heights Police are investigating a case involving two dogs.  They say both were underweight, according to vets, and one died.

"The dogs were underweight from the reports from the vets," said Lieutenant Kevin Reese with Sterling Heights Police.  "One dog that passed away, that the dog was extremely underweight and that there was no medical reasoning for that dog to be underweight."

For a while, things were looking up for Angel.  A video of a feeding shows her slowly eating food from a dish, but she appears weak, barely holding up her own head.  A photo shows her thin coat barely hiding her ribs.

Meanwhile, Shiner (pictured) is getting better, but still being nursed back to health.

Animal Control turned over their case to Sterling Heights Police.

"They felt that the incident was serious enough that they brought it to our attention.  We will continue to investigate it and hopefully bring charges to the Macomb County Prosecutor's Office for animal cruelty," Reese said.

Animal cruelty is a four year felony.

We're told the owner was moving from her Sterling Heights apartment and posted pictures of the dogs on Facebook looking for new owners.  A rescue company got involved and is now caring for Shiner.
