CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Three police officers responding to a call in the South Side South Shore neighborhood Wednesday morning were seriously injured when their unmarked car flipped over.

About 11:20 a.m., the officers--Brian McVey, 35, Jameka Sherrod, 30, and Dwayne McGee, 36-- were responding to a call for assistance for a robbery in progress. Sherrod, who was driving, swerved to avoid a white car in the intersection of East 70th Street and South Stony Island Avenue when the car flipped over and hit a telephone pole, according to News Affairs Officer Robert Perez. All three were wearing seat belts at the time.

McVey, an 8 year veteran and Sherrod, a 7 year veteran, were taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and McGee to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, all in stable condition, Perez said. Lake Shore Drive was temporarily shut down while they were transported to the hospitals.

Jameka Sherrod is expected to be released from Stroger tonight.

The CTA's southbound No. 28 Stony Island bus was temporarily rerouted around the scene of the accident as police responded to and investigated the crash.

No other vehicles were involved.
