CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A car driven by an armed man trying to flee police collided with several parked cars on the Northwest Side early Tuesday, then the driver jumped out and ran and left three critically injured passengers behind.
Officers on routine patrol in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood saw a man display a pistol out the driver's side window at another man, a statement from police said.
When officers approached, the man sped away, but the vehicle struck seven parked vehicles near West Wolfram Street and North Lamon Avenue, police said. The suspect then fled on foot while officers called for an ambulance for the injured occupants.
Assisting officers canvassed the area and were able to apprehend 22-year-old Fabian Regalado hiding in a gangway in the 4900 block of West George Street, police said. He refused medical attention. No weapon was recovered, police said.
Regalado, of the 2200 block of North Laramie Avenue, was charged with one felony count of aggravated fleeing, and was cited for reckless driving, failure to notify owners of damage to unattended vehicles, driving on a suspended license, and driving without insurance, according to police.
Two of the passengers in the vehicle were taken in critical condition to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical center, according to dispatch reports. A third person, who was pinned in the crashed vehicle, was freed about 1 a.m. and taken to a hospital in unknown condition.
Regalado was scheduled to appear in bond court Tuesday, according to police, but bond information was not immediately available.
