CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
New information surrounding an alleged hazing incident at a Maine West High School surfaced Monday morning.
The Chicago Sun-Times reports that a baseball player reported a hazing incident to the north suburban high school administrators back in 2008. Michael DiVincenzo was the coach at the time, and reportedly the students involved were punished.
"The students involved were interviewed by the school's deans and had
discipline consequences assigned. The incident involved at least four
other freshman baseball players who are alleged to have pulled a
teammate's pants down in a school locker room," says part of the statement released by Main Township High School.
Officials with Maine Township High School District 207 said they didn't know about the 2008 incident until just before a mother filed a lawsuit last week. The mother said that her 14-year-old son was also hazed, playing soccer.
Upon hearing of the 2008 incident on November 16, 2012, the District 207 statement states that Superintendent Ken Wallace instructed District officials to immediately notify DCFS about the event, saying:
"Our board of education policies are clear as they relate to hazing and bullying and do not tolerate acts of the nature that have been reported. We work hard to make our schools the very best that they can be, and thousands of students go to school every day in District 207 with exceptionally positive outcomes. We have already begun taking steps to reemphasize within our schools the serious nature of bullying and hazing and to send the clear message that we will act decisively to stop bullying and hazing from re-occurring and to investigate and strongly respond if it occurs. If there are other events that are similar to those already reported, please call me or Assistant Superintendent Greg Dietz in the District office to report them."
