CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Five people were injured -- one critically -- in an extra-alarm blaze at a Chicago Housing Authority high-rise for seniors on the Near West Side on Wednesday morning.

A still-and-box alarm was called about 9:15 for the high-rise at 1633 W. Madison St., according to dispatch reports. That alarm was raised to a 2-11 about 9:35 a.m.

The building is the Patrick Sullivan Apartments, a CHA building for seniors, according to the CHA website.

An EMS Plan 2, which sends at least 10 ambulances, was also called.

The fire originated in some bedding in a 9th floor apartment, according to Fire Media Affairs.

The fire was extinguished about 9:50 a.m.

Five people have been taken to hospitals. Two of them, one in good condition, one in serious to critical condition, were taken to the University of Illinois Medical Center at Chicago, according to Fire Media Affairs.

Three others, in fair to serious condition, were also taken to hospitals, according to Fire Media.

The CTA's No. 20 Madison bus is being rerouted around the scene of the fire. Westbound buses are heading from Madison to Ashland, to Washington, to Wood, then back to Madison, according to CTA spokeswoman Lambrini Lukidis. Eastbound buses are going from Madison to Wood, to Warren to Ashland then back to Madison, she said.

The CTA has sent a warming bus to the scene, as well, Lukidis said.

A CHA representative was not immediately available for comment.

The Chicago Fire Department has set up a media staging area outside the building at 1633 W. Madison.
