CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
One more thing, about the man charged in the Saturday night stabbing at the Westin hotel washroom.
We've been hearing how Jimmy Harris had just been freed from prison last week, how he has a decades long rap sheet, and a history of violence. But we haven't heard too many answers to the question: why was this guy out on the streets?
Harris who has past gang ties, has been arrested 60 times, including nine felony convictions dating back to the late 70's for robbery, burglary, and aggravated battery.
In 2007, he was convicted of stabbing a security guard during a grocery store robbery. He was paroled this past august but then in September arrested for aggravated battery and sent to Stateville prison.
When that charge was dismissed, Harris was free on parole again. Free to allegedly stab an Oak Brook doctor downtown with his family for the magnificent mile festival of lights. Since then, there have been a lot of questions about how safe Michigan Avenue is and what the police are doing. That's not what we should be focused on. The question we need to be asking is: if Harris was sentenced to eight years for his 2007 robbery conviction, why was this guy- with his long prior record- released three years early? I'm sure parole board members had a very good reason. I'd just like to hear it. The Chicago police are doing a great job. I'm not so sure about the courts.
