DETROIT (WJBK) -- Police say new evidence strongly points to the wrongful conviction of a Detroit man jailed for murder since 2006.

Elroy "Lucky" Jones is serving a life sentence after being convicted of murdering a man inside a now-vacant apartment building on Detroit's east side. From the beginning Jones' family has said police arrested the wrong man. "My son was at home with his girlfriend in the bed asleep," said Beverly Jones.

But a witness who initially said he didn't know who the killer was identified Elroy. "You can see this young man is lying," said Beverly.

A jury convicted Elroy of murder. The conviction was later overturned after the trial transcripts were stolen from the court reporter's car. That gave his family hope, but instead, he was tried again with the same result.

In August, Detroit police discovered new evidence that may lead Jones' exoneration. No specifics were immediately released.

"I hate the holidays, but I look forward to this Christmas," said Beverly.

The case is now in the hands of the Wayne County prosecutor's office for review.
