DETROIT (WJBK) -- 36-year-old Harry Weaver (pictured) is a husband, father and mentor to many. He never expected to be a crime victim, but back in September as he and a friend were leaving a meeting at the Masonic Temple on McDougall, a gunman tried to rob them.
"Something distracted him or scared him and he just started shooting," said Weaver.
He was hit in the stomach and back and is now paralyzed from the waist down. His friend was less seriously hurt.
Police believe Richard Nickerson is the shooter. He was just arraigned a few days ago and is charged with armed robbery, assault with intent to commit murder and other assault and weapons charges. He is being held on $250,000 bond and is due back in court next week.
Weaver has taught countless students a lesson of non-violence as education director for the Anti-Defamation League running a project called "No Place for Hate".
Despite a spinal cord injury and challenging odds, he plans to walk again. His wife, Dawn, is pregnant with their second child and the family needs help. They'll need a wheelchair accessible van and renovations at home. Several fund have been setup to help this man, who has made our community a better place.
Donations can be sent to the Bank of Birmingham, Attention: Harry Weaver Independence Fund, 33583 Woodward Ave., Birmingham, MI 48009 or care of the ADL office at 25800 Northwestern Highway, Suite 980, Southfield, MI 48075. You can also donate online at www.fundrazr.com/campaigns/1NdF6.
