Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving, the fight for $15 minimum wage: Chat Room

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On today's Chat Room Sun-Times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter discuss sales and salaries.

Black Friday is starting earlier this year, with many big box retailers opening on Thanksgiving day. Many are voicing resistance for this idea, insisting that it is unfair to have employees work on Thanksgiving.

Susanna thinks the retailers are well within their rights to open on Thanksgiving based on demand from consumers. Rochelle agreed, stating that employees may need to consider non-traditional meal times with family if they must work.

Next the ladies discussed the new labor movement,"Fight For $15." Are these retail and food service employees realistic with their demand for a higher wage?

Rochelle thinks they can ask for a higher wage, but it's only a shell game as companies will just cut hours or pass along the expense to their customers - so it's not a win! Susanna thinks these workers should find different jobs if they are not happy in their current roles. The jobs they represent in this movement are entry level jobs which don't require much skill, so why should they be paid a higher wage?
