All of this just a week before the start of the busiest travel time of the year.
"We're going to see out of Illinois about a 1.7% decrease in the number of people taking to the airways," explains AAA Chicago Spokesperson Beth Mosher.
Despite the lower numbers, passengers dealing with Thursday's delays are frustrated.
Colleen Lips says her mother drove to Chicago from Nebraska to pick her up. The only problem was, she didn't know when that would be!
"I came in from Pittsburgh and D.C. and the flight was delayed 3 times. We sat in the plane for an hour and she's been circling Chicago for the past 2 1/2 hours waiting to meet me because I had no idea when the plane was going to take off," Lips said.
Others spent hours waiting for passengers to arrive.
"Extremely frustrating especially since this meeting is probably 45 minutes," Kristin Goodallis said. "They have connecting flight which they had to change."
So as the holiday draws near, AAA suggests passengers be as flexible as possible and make a very important purchase.
"Get travel insurance because that is going to save you in issues that are at the airport and also issues that you may have personally," Mosher suggests.
According to Forbes, customer loyalty engagement index ranks Delta number 1 with United coming in 4th, and American Airlines coming in 6th.
