CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The Food and Drug Administration is investigating 13 deaths linked to the possible use of 5-Hour Energy shots.

The New York Time reports that the FDA has received 90 complaints about the drink since 2009, including 13 adverse event reports of fatalities following the consumption of 5-Hour Energy.

Following these reports, U.S. Senator Dick Durbin and U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal called for a meeting Thursday with the FDA Commissioner, Margaret Hamburg, to discuss the steps the agency is taking to ensure the safety of these products.

Last month, the FDA revealed problems with Monster energy drinks because of high amounts of caffeine.

Both companies say their products are safe.
