Controversial ads on CTA buses, no male equivalent for `mistress`: Chat Room

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Thursday's Chat Room, Sun-times Splash Editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter discuss entitlement and titles.

Have you seen the "Defeat Jihad" ads that just went up on the backs of some CTA buses? Many say the ads denigrate Muslims - but the advertiser is entitled to right put them there.

"In any war between the civilized man and the savage, support the civilized man," they read. "Defeat jihad."

Susanna thinks that the ads are allowed because of the precedent set by the Federal governments' ruling around the same campaign in NYC and D.C. Rochelle disagreed stating that the reaction people are having to the ads - including defacing them in NYC, show many think it's racist.

With the Petraeus military scandal growing, a blogger points out there's no male word in the English language for "mistress." If Paula Broadwell was Petraeus' mistress, what is he? A mister-ess? A man-tress?

Rochelle said they both should be called what they are – literally – cheaters. Susanna thinks there is no name for the cheating man because there have not been many powerful rich women who take up with less powerful men. Until that happens, a title will most likely not exist.
