Gas prices soar in Chicago area due to problems at Whiting refinery

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

If you go to fill up your gas tank this week, you may notice a sudden jump in prices at the pump.

Gas prices in Chicago and across the state of Illinois have jumped anywhere from 25 to 40 cents a gallon the past few days.

Fuel prices at a number of stations in the Chicago area have risen over $4 per gallon mark.

Industry analyst Phil Flynn told FOX 32 News Tuesday morning the increase of problems at a refinery in Whiting, Indiana is to blame.

The refinery was shut down for maintenance, and production was cut by a third. There is no word yet on how long it will take to complete that work.
