Ex-powerbroker Cellini gives up bid to remain free

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Longtime Illinois powerbroker William Cellini will report to jail on Jan. 4 to start serving his year-long sentence for corruption.

Cellini withdrew his request to remain free pending an appeal.

Defense attorney Thomas Kirsch II tells The Associated Press Cellini is considering forgoing any appeal - even though he believes he would prevail.

His one-page filing to withdraw cites quote "the stress" of the case on himself and his family.

Kirsch says the appeals process would take longer than Cellini's 1-year sentence. And he says Cellini and his family now want to put the legal saga behind them as quickly as possible.

Jurors convicted Cellini last year for trying to extort a movie producer for a $1.5 million contribution for then-Gov. Rod Blagojevich's campaign.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
