CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
A 44-year-old Hanover Park man was killed after he was struck by a vehicle on the Elgin-O'Hare Expressway late Monday, an accident state police are blaming on black ice.
Dhirajial Tejala Ratanpara, 42, was pronounced dead at 1:37 a.m. Tuesday at Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Elk Grove Village, according to the Cook County Medical Examiners office.
Ratanpara, of the 1400 block of Sutter Drive In Hanover Park, was eastbound on the expressway when he was involved in a fender-bender near Gary Avenue about 10:40 p.m., authorities said.
He exited his vehicle on the expressway and was struck by another vehicle, according to an Illinois State Police Elgin District 2 sergeant.
Very icy weather conditions that resulted in black ice on the roadway played a role in the accident, the sergeant said.
Charges have not been filed against the motorist who struck Ratanpara, pending the outcome of the police investigation.
The season's first snow caused slick roads that led to a number of accidents late Monday in the west and northwest suburbs.
By 11 p.m., officials shut down all lanes of the Elgin-O'Hare expressway between Gary Avenue and Roselle Road.
Numerous accidents were also reported along Route 59 at Bartlett and Route 53 at Palatine Road.
Police say multiple lanes were also closed on the Tri-State at Touhy Avenue.
