CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

As he said when he resigned, what he did showed extremely poor judgment--it was behavior unacceptable as a husband, and leader of the CIA. We have to be able to trust the man in charge of our nation's secrets. But the recent Veterans Day observances---that honor all American veterans for dedicated and loyal service to their country, have made me think about all the sacrifices David Petraeus has made to keep our country free. I think we should remember a few things about what this man has done, that not too many people are talking about right now.

Back in 2003 he led the 101st airborne in their attack on the regime of Saddam Hussein in Iraq. He then spent a couple of years in charge of training the new Iraqi army before taking command of the multi-national force responsible for the surge in Iraq. He became Commander of the U.S. Central Command overseeing operations in central Asia and the Middle East. He could have retired in 2010 but, as he said--when the president asks you to serve, you can't turn him down. So, he took over as commander of U.S. Forces in Afghanistan.

Veterans Day is set aside to say thanks and let those who serve know that we deeply appreciate them. The Petraeus affair shouldn't take away from what he's done to help keep our country free. His resignation letter to the CIA included a line that was largely ignored in the media. He said, in part, "you did extraordinary work on a host of critical missions and I am deeply grateful to you for that." We could say the same about him.

Somehow we've managed to forgive the personal life troubles of people like Robert Downey Jr., Alec Baldwin, and Pee Wee Herman. I think we can do that for the General.
