MIDLOTHIAN, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A gun buyback program and prescription drug turn-in will be held from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Nov. 17 at the Midlothian, Chicago Heights and Calumet City police departments, according to a news release from the South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police, which is hosting the event.

Firearms will be exchanged for $100 cash if the weapon and participant meet the program requirements.

All types of firearms will be accepted, but they must be unloaded and transported in a car trunk or inaccessible area of a van or pickup truck, police said. Participants must enter the turn-in site without the firearm, and police will accompany them back to the vehicle to retrieve it.

Anyone wanting to turn in a weapon without visiting a collection site should call their local police, the release said.

To get $100, the firearm must be functional. Pellet and BB guns will be accepted, but no money will be given, the release said.

Only residents of towns belonging to the SSACOP are eligible to take part. Those unsure whether their town is a member should call their local police.

The program ends when funds are exhausted, police said.

Unwanted, unused and expired prescription drugs also will be collected at all three sites.

Behind marijuana, prescription drugs are the substance most abused by teenagers, police said.

The Midlothian Police Department is at 14801 S. Pulaski Road. The Chicago Heights Police Department is at 1601 S. Halsted St., and the Calumet City Police Department is at 1200 Pulaski Road.
