Retired Steger firefighter killed in Crete hit-and-run

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -
A 70-year-old retired Steger firefighter was struck and killed by a vehicle in Crete early Monday.
Leonard "Lenny" Bottando was fatally struck in a hit-and-run on the 1300 block of Main Street, according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office.
Police said they responded to a call of a person struck at 8 p.m. Sunday. Bottando, of the 3600 block of Chicago Road in Steger, was pronounced dead at 12:18 a.m. Monday at St. James Hospital in Chicago Heights.
Crete police are looking for a Chevrolet utility vehicle with front-end damage. Closed circuit video from local businesses is being reviewed to identify the vehicle.
They are investigating the incident as a reckless homicide. Anyone with information should contact Crete police at (708) 672-0911.
According to the Chicago Tribune, Bottando held many service positions in the Chicago area. He retired from the Steger Fire Dept. with the rank of captain. Bottando was also a retired member of the Air Force reserves, previously worked for the CTA and owned a Steger gas station in the 1990s. He most recently inspected new construction sites and residences before people moved in for the village, and was also a rental car driver.
Those who knew Bottando told the Tribune he was a friendly man, with a great work ethic.
