SOUTHFIELD, Mich. (WJBK) -- Southfield police have released the name of a man who they say walked into police headquarters Sunday afternoon and opened fire.

Chief Eric Hawkins says 64-year-old Harold Joseph Collins was killed during the exchange of gunfire.

Hawkins says an officer remains in stable condition with a single gunshot wound in the shoulder. He says the officer, whose name is not being released, is a 27-year veteran.

Police say Collins, a Southfield resident and military veteran, first tried to shoot an officer behind bulletproof glass before officers exchanged gunfire with him.

Investigators are trying to figure out why Collins carried out the attack. Hawkins says Collins has no prior criminal history and no known grievance with police. A preliminary investigation did reveal that Collins was in poor health.

We'll continue to follow this story and bring you more updates during FOX 2 News tonight beginning at 5 p.m.
