1 dead, 22 wounded in weekend violence

One man is dead and at least 22 people were wounded from shootings throughout the city between Friday evening and Sunday night.

The weekend's one fatal shooting took place Saturday afternoon, when a 20-year-old man -- identified by the Cook County Medical Examiner's Office as Anthony Bagsby -- was shot multiple times in the chest in the 2600 block of East 79th Street about 1 p.m., police said

Bagsby, of the 7400 block of South Shore Drive, was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 1:33 p.m.

At least 11 people were wounded in shootings that occurred across the city on Sunday.

Three of those injuries came Sunday evening when three men were shot near a liquor store in the 200 block of South Western Avenue, police said.

One man was shot in the buttocks and back; another was shot in the shoulders. A third 48-year-old man suffered a bullet graze wound to the arm, police said of the 5:32 p.m. shooting.

Earlier in the afternoon, two men believed to be in their 20s were shot in the South Pullman neighborhood. The two men were in a van near West 122nd and South Halsted Streets when two other vehicles peppered their van with bullets about 3:30 p.m., police said.

One was stuck in the head, the other in the buttocks – both were taken in "stable" condition to Metro South Medical Center for treatment, police said.

Weekend violence started at 7:40 p.m. Friday in the 9000 block of South Colfax Avenue when a 19-year-old man was walking, heard shots and felt pain, police said. The man was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn with a gunshot wound to the leg.

Later that night, a 19-year-old man was shot in the head on the Near West Side, police said. Witnesses reported that the man was injured in a drive-by shooting while he was in a parking lot in the 2600 block of West Jackson Boulevard, unloading item from the back of a vehicle about 11 p.m.

The man was taken to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County in critical condition.

On Saturday night a 17-year-old boy, with alleged gang affiliations, was critically wounded while riding in a car in the Logan Square neighborhood, a police source said. The car was traveling in the 2400 block of North Monticello Avenue when a male standing in the street shot at it, striking the teen, police said. The shooter then fled on foot.

The teen and several other males in the car did not cooperate with police investigators.

Early Sunday, a 17-year-old boy and an 18-year-old woman were shot in the South Side Englewood neighborhood near 70th and Halsted Streets, police said. The victims were standing outside with a group of people when someone walked up and fired shots, according to police.

Police say the boy was taken in critical condition Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the head. The woman was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Saint Bernard Hospital.

An 18-year-old man was seriously wounded when he was shot in the chest early Sunday in the South Side Fuller Park neighborhood.

The shooting happened about 3:20 a.m. in the 4300 block of South Wallace Street, Gaines said. The victim, who was shot two times in the chest, was taken in serious condition to Stroger Hospital, police said.

A tabulation of shooting incidents indicates that, in total, one was killed and at least 22 were wounded between Friday and Sunday evenings.
