MAYWOOD, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Police in west suburban Maywood fatally shot a man who pointed a gun at an officer during a Thursday afternoon foot chase.
Xavier McCord, 20, of Maywood, died at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood a short time after an officer shot him once in the chest inside an apartment building about 4:30 p.m., authorities said.
Police were called to an apartment building in the 1800 block of South 19th Avenue for unspecified reasons, Maywood village spokesman Larry Shapiro said.
An officer arriving at the scene saw McCord outside the building and attempted to question him, but he ran toward the back of the building, Shapiro said. The officer chased and followed him as he entered the building from a back entrance.
Inside the building, the officer noticed McCord had a gun and ordered him to drop it. The man then raised the gun toward the officer, who shot him once in the chest, Shapiro said.
McCord was taken to Loyola, where he was pronounced dead at 4:55 p.m., according to the Cook County Medical Examiner's office. A Friday autopsy determined he died of multiple gunshot wounds to the chest and the death was ruled a homicide.
A gun was recovered at the scene, Shapiro said.
A police "integrity unit" is investigating, Shapiro said.
