Aldermen push for vote on elected school board

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Some Chicago aldermen vow to push for a city-wide vote on whether the school board should be elected rather than chosen by the mayor.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel opposes the change despite more than 86 percent of voters in some wards saying on Tuesday's ballot that they prefer it.

Chicago is the only school district in Illinois that does not have an elected board.

It consists of seven members who are appointed by the mayor and confirmed by city council.
