Skubick: Gov. Snyder should be pleased with election results

LANSING, Mich. (WJBK) -- Gov. Rick Snyder's name was not on the Tuesday ballot, but he had a lot riding on the outcome, and on balance he did pretty well. In fact had the ballot proposals gone the other way, the governor's grandiose plans to reinvent Michigan would have been in the dumper.
Even though he urged a "yes" vote on Proposal 1, the voters concluded, with a big push from the good folks in Detroit, that sending an un-elected czar to tell duly elected local officials to take a hike was rather un-American and un-Democratic.
But even though the voters have spoken, the senate GOP leader could have the last word. He has promised to revisit the EM issue because Sen. Randy Richardville (R-Monroe) believes this is the only way to keep cities and schools out of bankruptcy court.
Apart from that, the governor got his way on the other five proposals, but he should be careful about taking too much credit for the overwhelmingly "no" vote. It was the complexity of the issues that confused voters and when they are scratching their heads, they usually scratch the "no" column. Plus the citizens apparently understood that writing stuff into the constitution was a bad idea because it tied the hands of lawmakers to change laws when change might be needed. Had the amendments been adopted, the only way to alter them was with another statewide vote.
The GOP lost five seats in the Michigan House but the governor still holds a majority there and will still be working with his GOP Speaker Jase Bolger (R-Calhoun County) who dodged his own bullet at the polls.
And then there's the bridge. That was also a win for the governor who was outspent $32 million to almost nothing, but when the dust settled, the owners of the Ambassador Bridge lost.
End of story.
Nope. Snyder's deal with Canada may be headed for the courts.
The biggest loss for Team Snyder? Their guy didn't win the White House but this governor has established an admirable bi-partisan relationship with Team Obama,so privately, the GOP governor is probably not crying that much in his beer over Mr. Romney losing. But he would never admit it on camera.

Since the Tea Party is such an amorphous group with no political center of gravity, it's hard to get your arms around how much support Gov. Rick Snyder had the first time he ran.

One can only wonder what might have happened had all these White House messes unfolded as Mitt Romney and Barack Obama dashed for the finish line last November.

For obvious reasons nobody in the capitol press corps would ever admit this publicly. But if you applied a little truth serum, some would begrudgingly concede that Gov. Rick Snyder is a master at staying on message.

"To a certain extent, this is like a death. It's like a death or it's like a divorce. It's a major loss," said Dr. Howard Belkin.
The re-election of President Barack Obama was a hard-fought victory for Democrats coupled with an equally hard loss for Republicans who believed Mitt Romney would win. "It's like a death or it's like a divorce," said Dr. Howard Belkin.
