Man arrested before NATO pleads guilty to terrorism charge

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A Northwest Side man arrested on a terrorism charge just before the May NATO Summit in May pleaded guilty Tuesday and was sentenced to four years in prison and deportation.

Sebastian Senakiewicz, 24, pleaded guilty to one felony count of falsely making a terrorist threat and Judge Nicholas Ford sentenced him to four years in prison with a recommendation of boot camp, according to the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

The Polish native will be deported when his sentence is complete.

Senakiewicz, of the 3600 block of North Odell Avenue, was charged May 19 with one count of making terrorist threats.

Police arrested him at his home about 4:15 p.m. on May 17 for conspiring to build at least one Molotov cocktail to detonate at the NATO Summit. He was also accused of claiming he would hide some of the explosives in a hollowed-out Harry Potter book.

Senakiewicz admitted he had no explosives, and none was found in the Chicago home where he was staying.

He described himself as a member of the notorious Black Bloc anarchist group and said he was upset at the "lack of chaos" in Chicago, prosecutors said.

Occupy Chicago said in a statement that Senakiewicz pleaded guilty to get out of Cook County Jail.

"Cook County Jail is a deeply hostile and dangerous place, and today one of the NATO 5 agreed to plea to criminal charges in a move to gain transfer from the hellhole," the statement said.

The group says Senakiewicz made "remarks about nonexistent bomb in non-existent Harry Potter book in alcohol-fueled remarks to undercover cops."

State's Atty. Anita Alvarez then used a state anti-terrorism law to charge him in what Occupy called "an unprecedented application of the never-before-used law."

The group believes the charges were "part of a broad strategy by local law enforcement to infiltrate and disrupt peaceful protest activities, to frighten the public and to deter opposition to the NATO meeting."
