Rodney Davis wins 13th District Congressional race for U.S. House

CHICAGO (Associated Press) -

Republican Rodney Davis has defeated Democrat David Gill to win a congressional seat in central Illinois.

Gill initially faced Republican incumbent Tim Johnson of Urbana in the 13th District. But after just weeks after an easy primary win in the new district Johnson abruptly announced that he wouldn't seek re-election. He cited the desire to spend more time with family after six terms in Congress.

The state Republican Party picked Davis to fill the place on the ballot.

Davis was a member of Rep. John Shimkus' staff and lives in Taylorville. Gill is a Bloomington physician who challenged Johnson in past elections.

The race was among a number around the state and country characterized by sharply critical ads paid for by national political organizations.
