Two south suburban election judges dismissed

COUNTRY CLUB HILLS, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

Two south suburban election judges were dismissed Monday after officials learned they had inspected and attempted to set up voting equipment days before they were scheduled to do so.

The judges inspected supplies and equipment Friday at the Country Club Hills City Hall precinct at 4200 W. Main St., according to Cook County Board of Elections spokeswoman Courtney Greve.

"We had gotten calls from voters that these judges were in the voting supply carriers on Friday," Greve said.

The judges, a mother and son, were supposed to go into the Country Club Hills polling area with the other judges on Monday.

The Cook County Board of Elections was notified Sunday and after speaking with other polling judges assigned to the precinct, the judges were dismissed Monday, Greve said.

"There was no reason for the two judges to look at the equipment Friday," Greve said. "It was inappropriate behavior by the election judges and they were dismissed because they didn't follow instructions."

Country Club Hills residents are voting today on a hotly contested referendum to reduce the number of aldermen from two per ward to one per ward. Greve said there was no way to know the dismissed judges' intentions.

Greve said investigators were sent in to make sure all the equipment was secure, even though it is virtually impossible to get away with stuffing the ballot box because a zero tape is run when the poll opens on election day, ensuring there are no existing votes.

"We know they weren't able to impact the vote in any way," Greve said. "But what they did was inappropriate."
