CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -
Dan Plesac confirmed that he will interview for the vacant Cubs' television analyst position this week.
Reached on the phone, Plesac refused further comment on the situation.
Plesac, a Crown Point native who works in studio as an analyst for MLB Network, is set to interview with WGN officials, including current play-by-play man Len Kasper, on Thursday evening and then meet with the Cubs brass — including chairman Tom Ricketts — on Friday, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
Plesac is at the top of a short list of candidates in the mix to replace announcer Bob Brenly, who left the booth last month after eight seasons as an analyst, all of them with Kasper. He replaced former Cubs first basemen Mark Grace in the Diamondbacks booth. Grace was fired after a DUI arrest last summer — his second in 15 months.
A three-time all-star, Plesac played 18 seasons, mostly as a reliever. That included a stint with the Cubs in 1993-94.
The hang-up with Plesac was thought to be his long-term deal with MLB Network. After a conversation with Cubs president Crane Kenney, MLB decided to let him interview for the position.
Plesac interviewed for the Cubs radio analyst position that opened after Ron Santo died in December, 2010, but he was never offered the position that went to former Cubs outfielder Keith Moreland.
Plesac, who has two children, no longer has a residence in Northwest Indiana. He started his broadcasting career with Comcast SportsNet as a studio analyst.
ESPN analysts Rick Sutcliffe and Fox announcer Eric Karros — both former Cubs players — have expressed interest in the Cubs analyst position.
