President Barack Obama's supporters are cheering in Chicago after the Democrat won a second term.
Supporter Michelle Marshall wore a black Obama T-shirt and said in 2008 "it was elation" while Tuesday night "is more a sigh of relief." But the 30-year-old thinks "it's a good sigh." Volunteer Ben Rios says he was thrilled to vote for Obama in his first election. The 18-year-old DePaul University student says it "feels so good" after working so hard and making so many calls on behalf of Obama.
Dignitaries were in the crowd too. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, U.S. Sen. Dick Durbin and U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush were all at the McCormick Place rally on Lake Michigan.
Earlier in the night, FOX Chicago caught up with Rahm Emanuel at McCormick Place.
"Look, this is a big moment for America. And you have a president and a lot of people four years ago didn't think could be president. You think about it from 2004, he gave a speech. Four years later, he is the President of the United States, now re-elected it says a lot about the change in this country," Emanuel said. "When presidents get re-elected that is a validation for the course they set for the country."
Durbin walked into the main hall at McCormick Place along Lake Michigan early Tuesday. He's a little nostalgic to realize this is Obama's last campaign. He says he wants "this to be a winner for the country."
Many at the Tuesday night event were Obama campaign staffers and volunteers wearing Obama T-shirts.
One supporter is 32-year-old Angela Burke. She's been working at Obama campaign headquarters in Chicago since the spring. She says she feels the same enthusiasm as four years ago when Obama's election night rally drew thousands to nearby Grant Park.
Security is at the highest level, with parking bans and street closures are expected around the South Loop neighborhood.
