Role of race in the presidential race, canceling the New York Marathon: Chat Room

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

In Monday's Chat Room, Sun-Times Splash editor Susanna Negovan and consultant Rochelle Trotter talk race and races.

With the presidential election only one day away, much has been said about white voters overwhelming support for Romney - and that it's partly (even mostly) "due to racism."

Is race really a deciding factor in this election?

Susanna thinks race played more of a role in the 2008 Presidential election when America had a chance to show the world how progressive it is by electing an African American president. Now the world is evaluating this race based on performance of President Obama over the past four years, and race is less of an issue.

Rochelle disagreed, stating race is definitely an issue - as was so openly shown with the recent attack on Stacy Dash when she announced support of Romney. However President Obama can't expect to win based simply on demography, as the percent of voters who are eligible to vote doesn't coincide with the increase in actual minority population.

Next the ladies chatted about the NYC Marathon cancellation. Should the Mayor have cancelled this race?

Susanna thinks he should have and doesn't understand why it took him so long to make the decision. Rochelle agreed, although she wondered if his delay in decision was affected by the millions of dollars of revenue which would have been made had the race been conducted.
