CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A south suburban man is being held without bond for kidnapping his young child and then trying to run over a police officer with a car in the West Side Lawndale neighborhood Sunday night, authorities said.

Nicholas Sauer, 27, of the 7200 block of West 112th Street in Worth, is charged with child abduction, attempted murder, aggravated battery of a police officer and aggravated vehicular hijacking, according to Andy Conklin, spokesman for the Cook County State's Attorney's office.

He was denied bond on Monday and a preliminary hearing was set for Nov. 9, Conklin said.

Sauer allegedly abducted his 2-year-old child from southwest suburban Bridgeview. After being informed of an Amber alert for the child, officers spotted them at the Church's Chicken restaurant near West Roosevelt and South Independence about 7 p.m., police said.

He was allegedly trying to buy drugs, said Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden.

Officers confronted the man in the parking lot of the restaurant, authorities said, and he got into a burgundy sedan with the child.

As police approached, the man drove toward an officer, striking him and flinging the 16-year veteran cop onto the hood of the car, Camden said. The officer -- fearing for his life -- fired shots at the car, striking the man, according to a statement from police.

Sauer, who was shot in the head, was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, authorities said.

The officer, 40, suffered a broken leg with multiple fractures and was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries for treatment, authorities said.

The baby, who was found in the back seat of the car, was taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital with minor injuries suffered during the incident, according to the department statement.

The Independent Police Review Authority is also investigating, spokesman Larry Merritt said.
