CHICAGO – Following a 14-2 run to open the game, the DePaul men's basketball team rolled to a 91-74 exhibition win over visiting Lewis on Saturday night at McGrath-Phillips Arena. Donnavan Kirk and Cleveland Melvin each finished with double-doubles while three other Blue Demons finished in double-figures in what was DePaul's lone preseason contest.
Saturday served as the third straight year that the Flyers and Blue Demons faced off in exhibition play. After registering just 68 and 70 points in their 2010 and 2011 matchups, respectively, DePaul amassed 52 in the first half alone while Lewis managed just 27. In the opening frame, the Blue Demons shot 59.6-percent from the field, thanks in part to a 5-for-7, 11-point shooting effort from Kirk.
Melvin finished with a game-high 25 points to go along with his game-high 11 boards. Jamee Crockett added 14 points for DePaul while Brandon Young and Charles McKinney each added 10.
DePaul opens its 2012 campaign next Friday, Nov. 9 at McGrath-Phillips Arena against UC-Riverside. Tipoff is scheduled for 8 p.m. after the DePaul women's basketball team takes on Nicholls State in its season-opener as part of the Maggie Dixon Classic.
