Game Preview: Bears at Titans

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

FOX Chicago Sports Analyst Tom Waddle's preview of Sunday's matchup between the Chicago Bears and Tennessee Titans.

Offense

I'm not gonna lie, it's not always a pleasant watch. Last Sunday was 55 minutes of misery and five minutes of football ecstasy. The offensive line has reverted back to their bad tendencies, allowing six more sacks this week. That's 11 in the last two weeks. Dropped passes and narrow running lanes aren't helping the cause. The stats don't speak to brilliance, but no quarterback has a higher 4th quarter rating than Jay Cutler. It's gotta get better though. With Matt Forte, Brandon Marshall, Cutler, and others, there's too much talent in that huddle for them to continue to struggle.

For the Titans, veteran Matt Hassellbeck has provided a spark. He has a nice group of receivers in Kenny Britt, Nate Washington, and Kendall Wright, but it all starts with Chris Johnson. After a rocky start, Johnson has rushed for at least 91 yards in each of his last three games, with a 195 yard performance against the Buffalo Bills two weeks ago. Despite what we witnessed last week, I give the Bears a slight edge on offense.

Defense

They weren't at their best last Sunday but Rod Marinelli's guys contributed two sacks, two more takeaways and another pick-6. That's 23 sacks, 23 takeaways, and 6 defensive touchdowns. They also lead the league with 16 interceptions. They gave up over 400 yards but held the Carolina Panthers to one touchdown and five field goals. It's hard to believe they can continue this level of production, but you gotta ride the wave.

The Titans don't do anything particularly well on defense. They are equal opportunity bad against the run and pass. They haven't produced many big plays either sacking just 10 quarterbacks and forcing 11 turnovers. Kameron Wimbley is the Titan to keep an eye on. He has a tremendous burst off the edge and can give this struggling Bears offensive line fits. No shocker here. The Bears get the edge on defense.

Special Teams

Robbie Gould missed his first field goal inside 40 yards in two years. Then he redeemed himself with the game winner. It hasn't been a great year for the Bears special teamers, but they get the edge here.

Intangibles

They're not all gonna be masterpieces, but a few weeks from now we're gonna look at the schedule and there's gonna be a "W" next to the Carolina game. A less poised team would've lost, but Lovie's guys continue to pick each other up. The momentum is intact as the winning streak has reached five, but the scare should serve as a reminder that on any given Sunday, an inferior team can rise up and knock you down.

The Titans have an unimpressive 3-5 record, but there's enough talent in their huddles to make you sweat. At 6-1, the Bears are riding high, but can't get caught looking ahead. After the Titans, the schedule get a whole lot harder, and with the Packers finding themselves, they must finish the second quarter of the season on a high note. They will.

Prediction

Bears 24, Titans 16
