The Talker: Decision to cancel NYC marathon

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

All week, there was debate about whether the New York City marathon should be held.

Some said no way -- not six days after Hurricane Sandy swamped the east coast, destroyed homes, killed dozens of people, and left millions more without power.

But Mayor Bloomberg and marathon planners saw it differently. The idea was that the event would serve as inspiration; to show New Yorkers, and the world, that the city was down but not out. In theory, it made sense.

The Mets and Yankees resumed baseball shortly after 9/11. The marathon went on as planned that year too. All of it was inspirational, but this was different.

The "we can rally" plan didn't stick with so many New Yorkers still desperate for help to get their lives back together. Some said the marathon would pull police officers off more important duties. The image of two huge generators powering a marathon media tent stoked the skepticism.

Mayor Bloomberg felt the pressure and, Friday afternoon, made the sudden switch. An estimated 40,000 runners -- many from across the country and world -- had already arrived in New York for the marathon.

Kristen Beck is a CPS cross-country running coach who was set to fly out Saturday to run the race. She says she's crushed and wishes New York had made the call sooner. But, she understands.

"It's hard to rationalize going through with the race knowing that the generators they were gonna use for the heating tents and the media power 400 houses and there are people still without electricity and without homes," Beck says. "All in all I think it was the right call. I think it's just hard only 30 hours before the race."
