Anheuser-Busch halts beer to make water for Sandy victims

CARTERSVILLE, Ga. -

A metro Atlanta brewery has switched from churning out beer to water to help victims of superstorm Sandy.

Anheuser-Busch plans on shipping 1 million cans of drinking water to New York and New Jersey from its Cartersville brewery.

"It's devastating. We have a lot of employees who have families who have been hurt personally by this," said Rob Haas, general manager of the plant.

It's something Aneheuser-Busch first did to help victims of the 1906 San Francisco earthquake. Since then, they've shipped more than 70 million cans of water to disaster areas.

"When you look at the devastation, this is the least thing that we can do. We're good at this. This is our way of helping," said Haas.

The 1 million cans of water will be produced in Cartersville in just 36 hours.

"We're going to be staging water at different locations in New York, in Brooklyn and also three places in New Jersey and then the Red Cross will be in charge of distributing it to where it's needed most, " said Haas.

For a few days, beer will take a backseat at the brewery as the top priority will be getting the water to those who need it.

"This truck, once it leaves here, it's going to be on the road driving all night and that water will get there tomorrow," said Haas.

Anheuser-Busch is uniquely skilled not only to produce the water, but to quickly get it where it's needed. They're working through their distributors to get the water to the hardest hit areas. About 4,000 CASES are already on the ground up north and a lot more will be on the way in the next 24 hours.
