Chicago police officer recovering after shooting last March

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

He survived getting shot two times. Now Chicago cop Del Pearson is getting better. But he's not out of the woods quite yet.

Pearson was shot twice in March.

The bullet that hit him in the shoulder severed a main artery and lodged in his neck, near his spine.

Miraculously he survived after seven hours of surgery and losing 2/3's of his blood.

Therapy is helping Pearson, but only time will tell if he will ever be able to return to the job he loves.

And relatives say the costs of recovery, could be overwhelming.

"Well, emotionally he is doing great. In terms of physically, he is making progress but he's still is missing some feeling in his fingers and part of his arm but with the rehab he is getting better. We're just not sure what the overall progress will be longterm," said Cindy Reno, Pearson's sister.

Pearson's family and friends are having a fundraiser for him this Sunday at 115 Bourbon Street to raise money for all his medical costs.

The man who investigators say shot Pearson is awaiting trial on attempted murder charges.
