The Talker: Does the retail holiday season start too early?

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There has been a sudden change of season, happening right before our eyes.

Halloween is over. So, at a CVS store along Michigan Avenue there was a big display of "50% off" of Halloween candy.

But, you know what was sitting right there next to it? A bunch of 3-foot-tall nutcrackers, just in time for the winter holidays. Or, did they show up too early?

Signs of the December holidays are all around. Chicago's official tree was harvested Thursday from the yard of the Theiszmann family in Prospect Heights. It's due to arrive at Daley Plaza Friday evening.

Designers at Macy's on State Street have been hard at work with their holiday window designs. They're still under wraps, but we got a sneak peak inside. But seven weeks before Christmas, the "The Magic of Christmas" display is about to go public on Saturday.

Macy's is a holiday laggard compared to some other stores. Target and Toys 'R Us started their holiday marketing campaigns before Halloween.

And, Thursday, Starbucks put its red cups back into circulation. For millions of people, that's how you know it's holiday-time. Eggnog lattes, anyone?

For anyone who thinks the commercialism deserves mocking -- even some businesses behind the commercialism are right there with you.

The coupon website, in cheeky fashion, has declared this time of year "Octo-novem-cember." It's mascot is a pumpkin-headed turkey dressed in a Santa suit.

Along with the post-ironic humor, you can get a coupon for 30% off a purchase at JC Penny.
