Walsh, Rep. Miller investigate Duckworth, Pelosi hosts fundraiser

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Democrat Tammy Duckworth denounced Thursday what she called "shady" campaign finance moves by Rep. Joe Walsh.

He, in turn, brought a powerful House Republican committee chairman to town who vowed to investigate Duckworth's tenure at the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The 8th District election is one of the most closely watched and expensive congressional contests in the country, underscored by former Speaker Nancy Pelosi's appearance at a fundraiser held at Harry Caray's baseball-themed restaurant Thursday for the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

Inside, Nancy Pelosi told a fundraiser hosted by Mayor Emanuel, that Illinois is the center of her "Drive to 25." That's how many seats Democrats must pick up nationwide next Tuesday for Pelosi to become Speaker of the House once again. They're hoping to flip five currently Republican seats just in Illinois, including Rep. Joe Walsh's 8th District in the Northwest Suburbs.

That's where Walsh brought fellow Republicans on the U.S. House Committee on Veterans Affairs Thursday. They renewed allegations that when Tammy Duckworth was under Secretary of the Veterans Affairs, she wasted millions of dollars that they plan to investigate.

"Money that should be going to the veterans of this country, used unfortunately for many, many years by the employees themselves." Rep. Jeff Miller (R) of Florida said.

Duckworth denied any wrongdoing and accused Miller of abusing his committee chairmanship.

"The Republicans have been doing this all year long, using their position, official positions for political gain, which shows that both Mr. Walsh and now Mr. Miller, who calls himself the most conservative member of Congress, are willing to violate ethics laws in order to campaign," Duckworth responded.

Walsh responded by pointing to 21 Duckworth donors who also contributed to a Super PAC that's backing her, suggesting some level of coordination. New campaign finance rules are fueling an unprecedented burst of spending in many federal races.
