Paying for public school parenting, digital billboards on Chicago property: Chat Room

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

On Thursday's Chat Room, Sun-Times Splash Editor and consultant Rochelle Trotter discuss two very controversial topics: Pay-per-performance parenting and advertising on city property.

Mayor Emmanuel has developed a partnership with Walgreen's which would give parents a $25 gift card if they show up for parent teacher conferences and pick up report cards.

Susanna thinks this is a great idea because the focus has been on the teachers for too long. Now the mayor is focusing on the parents and their role in assisting with their childrens education, and an incentive of this kind is a good idea.

Rochelle disagreed, stating that this is simply playing into the already horrible stereotype which exists around low income, ethnic moms - always looking for a handout! She said $25 should be given as a reward to those who are doing the right thing like involved parents or teachers who spend their own money on the kids.

Next the ladies discussed the very controversial proposal to sell city space to private outdoor advertising companies as a revenue builder.

Rochelle likes the idea as it could cut millions off of the city budget deficit. Susanna agreed, stating the plans in place will ensure the ads are located in appropriate locations - versus the Wabash outdoor advertising fiasco.
