Police issue Halloween night warning for trick-or-treaters, parents

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Just steps from a front door of a Maple Park home, detectives say an elderly man with white hair and glasses tried to lure an 8-year-old boy from his home. This happened Tuesday night, prompting police to issue a warning on Halloween night targeting area trick-or-treaters and their parents.

"All the groups that have come to my house this evening have had an adult in a group," said mother Wendy Haacker.

And that's a good start. Police say children should not trick-or-treat without adult supervision.

Even at 16 years old, Wendy Haacker said her son is never too old to practice precaution.

"I did make sure that he knows not to pick up anybody or talk to strangers just to be very safe at the party that he's at tonight," said Hacker. "He's my everything, he's all I have, right... that's our job as a parent. "

After Tuesday night's close call, police are giving parenting advice after investigators combed the area searching for the suspicious man and his vehicle. Detectives say the suspect remains at large on a night when neighborhoods are filled with unassuming targets.

"Here's an incident where the mom actually saw this car and saw everything unfold so this is definitely a very credible incident," said Kane County Sheriff's Office Lt. pat Gengler. "An 8 year old is pretty young, talk to the kids, obviously this kid knew exactly what to do - not to go in the car, run for help, he ran right to the house, the car left."
