The Talker: Can you be too old for Halloween?

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Halloween is bigger than ever. Analysts said $8 billion would be spent on it this year -- more than an 11% increase from last year.

Do you know who's driving that trend up? It's all the adults dressing up to celebrate. Forbes reports 67% of adults in America think Halloween is for them as well as children.

The national retail federation says, in all, 71% of Americans will celebrate Halloween this year -- the most since its survey was started.

Half of Americans planned to decorate their homes and here's a fun fact: the average trick-or-treater gets 91 pieces of candy.

Some of the adults dressing up sent FOX Chicago photos of their costumes from weekend parties and from work.

There are a few theories about why adults are digging Halloween so much. One marketing expert said it's because the holiday has no downside. You get the fun, but you don't have to travel, deal with family, or -- if you're single -- worry about finding a date. Also, you can wear whatever you want and not be judged.

One anthropologist said Halloween is a chance for emotional cleansing and a day to strike back at the concept of death -- to get right in its face and mock it.

But, it's not that deep for everyone. Some people just like to dress up the dog.

Americans are estimated to have spent $370 million this year on costumes for their pets. If you're an adult celebrating Halloween you still might want to steer clear of trick-or-treating. A survey found the average adult thinks people should stop trick-or-treating when they turn 14.

Here's what our Facebook and Twitter friends say about adults dressing up.

Bruce says: "You're never too old for Halloween!"

Rod says: "Why not? It makes us feel like kids again."

From Gerri: "I say it's great. Make it a family affair so it brings back family fun, which is lacking these days."

The staff at Fiat of Chicago sent a photo to foxpix@foxchicago.com and wrote: "we came to work today with a lot of goofiness and our customers love it -- and they go with it!"

Nereida says: "With all that's going on today in our world it's good to have some fun."
