Chicago surpasses last year's homicide total

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicago surpassed last year's total of 435 homicides Monday when a man died after being shot in the South Chicago neighborhood, authorities said.

The city surpassed it this Sunday with the shooting death of 68-year-old Bariffe Fitz who lived here in the 9400 block of South LaSalle Street.

"We would always be over at his house or he would be over here always exchanging laughs, smiles," neighbor Jakia Neeley says of Fitz.

Neeley says Fitz was like an uncle to her. Someone who would care for her elderly grandparent's lawn in the summer and winter.

Chicago Police say he was killed inside his home Sunday night. It is unclear if it was an intruder.

"It hurts a lot, because Sunday morning we had just seen him. Saturday we were just over there hanging out him," Neeley said.

33-year-old Carlos Alexander became homicide 436 in not far from Fitz's murder in the 7900 block of Escanaba.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy appeared on Good Day Chicago this morning and spoke about the unfortunate milestone.

"There's no such thing as an acceptable murder number," McCarthy said. "And this is a process, what we're doing is having a definite impact on what's happening and unfortunately it's going to be overshadowed by the fact that we've now reached a milestone."

Mayor Rahm Emanuel also added the numbers aren't good, but pointed to other milestones being achieved.

"Overall crime is down 9% in the city, the single largest drop on record," Emanual said. "Second, we're tearing down the 200th building today where gangbangers and drug dealers hang out."

At the scene of another shooting on the Southwest Side, neighbors are nervous about the rising numbers.

"I stay off the streets because you never know what's going to happen," says Norm Casarez. "A car drives by, either you look like somebody or they just don't care anymore."
