Chicagoans can flu shot clinics citywide with interactive maps

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

A new mapping tool could make finding locations to get flu shots more convenient for Chicago residents.

The Chicago Department of Public Health and a local web developer have launched a new interactive web map that pinpoints citywide flu shot clinics and their hours of operation.

Officials hope the mapping tool will encourage residents to get flu shots in their community.

The collaboration emerged from conversations between the health department and the social group, OpenGovChicago, during an event at which volunteer developers collaborate on civic technology projects.

Officials say the map is just one of the approaches the city is taking to ensure the health of all Chicagoans.

Canadian researchers found people who received the flu vaccine were 50% less likely to experience a heart attack or stroke, and 40% less likely to die from one.

They believe the vaccine could be an important way to maintain heart health and ward off strokes.

Researchers said larger-scale studies are needed.
