Ill. Teachers Retirement System concerned about pensions due to poor return

Posted: Updated:
CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

There are new concerns Friday about the teacher retirement pension covering thousands of teachers around the state of Illinois.

The Illinois Teachers Retirement System said it earned only 0.76% on its $36 billion in assets during the last fiscal year.

That poor return will put more pressure on the fund to keep up with the benefits it must pay out.

Fund officials said the poor return was caused by an 11% loss in international stocks.

They point out the fund has an average return of close to 8% over the past 20 years.
